Influx of Companies Fuelling Growth in the Surrey and Sussex Job Market

Think London is the only place to be for businesses in the South East? Think again.

At Ambra Recruitment we’ve always been focused on helping companies in the Sussex and Surrey area source top professional talent to grow their business. And we’re busier than ever before, as more and more companies are setting up across the region’s hubs including Crawley, Dorking, Redhill & Reigate, Haywards Heath, and Brighton and Hove.

Surrey & Sussex A Growing Economy

Business is booming: 121,000 companies call the Surrey and Sussex area home, and the region generated £74.1 billion for the UK economy in 2013.  With Gatwick Airport, the UK’s second largest airport placed strategically at the centre, the region is conveniently connected to 74 countries around the globe, as well as being a short hop from London and easily accessible to the rest of the UK. Professional firms from a diverse range of industries are moving in: big players in finance and insurance dominate Redhill, aerospace and aviation are found clustered around Crawley, and Brighton and Hove is home to a plethora of creative and tech start-ups.

And things are only looking brighter. The expansion of the Manor Royal business park, at the heart of Gatwick, is set to create further opportunities for career-minded professionals. Manor Royal is already home to many blue chip global firms like CG, Thales and Elekta, but there’s room for growth. According to the ‘masterplan vision’ by 2026 Manor Royal “will evolve into the south east’s leading mixed-activity employment hub, providing modern business accommodation, a range of supporting amenities and achieving environmental excellence to drive the growth of Crawley and the Gatwick Diamond economy”. Redhill and Haywards Heath are also seeing significant regeneration projects which is expected to bring more jobs and a further boost to the local economy.

All this investment and activity in the region is creating new opportunities for ambitious professionals looking for their next career move. While London clearly remains a pull with its big city status, it’s clear that people are increasingly recognising Surrey and Sussex as winning places for building a successful career. Crawley was ranked as paying the highest salaries in the UK after London, (an average of £641 a week) and according to Adzuna study, Surrey and Sussex employees were among those experiencing high workplace satisfaction, encouraged by factors like promotions within 6 months and regular feedback. While it’s true that salaries are around 13% lower than London, commuting costs can be high (a season ticket can cost well over £4000 annually), not to mention higher cost of gym memberships, lunch, and the burden of travelling daily.  We predict that the influx of employers in the region will cause more candidates to opt for shorter commutes and a healthier work life balance by choosing to work in Surrey and Sussex, where thriving, dynamic economies nestle alongside scenic countryside. We think you’d be mad not to.
